start and stop program in putty shell

Hi,
I’m playing around with my EV3 and Monobrick. I wonder if it’s possible to start and to stop programs on the brick in the putty shell. Logging in as root, going to the apps directory and into the folder of the program and then trying to run the program by typing programname.exe did not work. I’ll appreciate any information on this.
